No ifs, ands or putts … The Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation is hosting its first annual Monumental Tournament of Aces on Saturday, October 4th at Cochrane Golf Club, and friends of the foundation are urged to leave their flatsticks at home for this one-of-a-kind fundraising event. Every hole will be converted to a par-3 with three pin placements, meaning golfers will have numerous chances to achieve something Lindsay always strived for perfection. Lindsay was tragically taken as a passenger in a single-vehicle rollover on February 17, 2008, at the age of 26. Today, her legacy lives on not only in the hearts of family, friends and former teammates, but through the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation. There’s no doubt Lindsay, an aspiring doctor, had the smarts, skills and determination to touch thousands of lives. She was Cochrane High’s valedictorian in 1999, was revered by professors and fellow medical school students at the University of Calgary and had already scaled the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The goal of the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation is to provide support and inspiration for others to reach similar heights. The foundation will provide funds to youth groups and sports organizations in the Cochrane area, aid in the purchase of technical training tools at the University of Calgary Medical School and provide enduring scholarships at the high school and university level, plus sponsorship for minor hockey players who could not normally afford fees and equipment costs While her favorite sport required two nets and a sheet of ice, Lindsay didn’t mind golf, so long as the Oilers were booking spring tee-times before her beloved Flames. Through events like the first-ever Monumental Tournament of Aces, the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation will continue Lindsay’s legacy of making the world a better place. If you have any questions, please contact tournament organizing committee representatives Mike Borody (932-4119) or Taylor Kimmett (850-9440).
Golfers to tee up for Kimmett fund By Brad Herron The Eagle
Monumental isn’t a word used often to describe a golf tournament. But for Mike Borody and the many others organizing the Tournament of Aces for the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation, that is exactly what they are doing. For Borody, initiating the tournament was a small gesture to help future students and remember Lindsay, who died in a traffic accident Feb. 17. “Outside of everything else, I am still a husband and a father, and I still get emotional thinking what it would be like to lose one of my daughters and I just wanted to do something,” he said. Since he came up with the idea, Borody says the tournament has continued to gain steam. A number of people have signed up to join committees, lightening the load on everyone involved. Scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Cochrane Golf Club, it will be a closest-to-the-pin contest with tees moved in to between 50 to 165 yards. Prizes will also awarded for holes-in-one, including a new vehicle for an ace on the 185-yard No. 8. Borody said they are “looking for sponsors, silent auction items, live auction items, basically anything anyone wants to contribute and golfers.” Taylor Kimmett, Lindsay’s brother, said Aug. 4 that he hoped the day will be “something different than just your plain, old golf tournament.”Outside of the shortened course, the day will feature a putting contest and a hockey marksmanship contest. Although the ultimate goal is to raise money for the foundation, the event is a way for the Kimmett family to show a appreciation to the place they call home. “People in Cochrane seem to always be there for you, and it hasn’t been just this golf tournament, it has been the last six months of people just supporting us. We don’t have to ask them for this help, it’s just a way to give back to them, give them a fun day for helping us out so much over the last little while,” Kimmett said. About half of the 132 spots have been filled. The fee is $150. Registration begins at noon, with the action at the Cochrane Golf Club starting at 1 p.m. The owners of the course donated its use for the day. With Lindsay’s death still on his heart, Borody said the day is shaping up to be something no one will forget. “We all love our kids unbelievably and when you lose someone with all the talent, potential and beauty they did, it has to be a double, or triple loss,” he said.
Golf for a cause Jack Tennant Cochrane Eagle We need golfers and an outhouse. Golfers first, of course. There will never be a better chance to score an ace than the Tournament of Aces on Oct. 4 at the Cochrane Golf Club. It’s a fundraiser for the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation and it works like this: There are nine holes and the tees have been moved so the yardage ranges from 50 to 165 yards. There are all sorts of events going on designed to raise money and break your concentration or the aces, but it will all be fun. Lindsay Kimmett tragically died in a motor vehicle accident Feb. 17, so support the cause and give Mike Borody a call at 403-932-4119. If you can’t play, buy a house from him. Now the outhouse race. The Cochrane Generals hockey players are strapping young lads anxious to run but don’t have an outhouse for the races Aug. 30. If you have an outhouse that needs runners give me a call at the Eagle (403-932-6588) and we’ll match you up.
